IKEA Book Shelves Transformed Into a Queen Size Bed

My FBP and I are always looking for new projects to help us gain back more space in our small Queen Anne condo.  With this project, we gained 8 inches in our bedroom.  It means the difference between bruised knees and stubbed toes and pain free trips from the bed to the bathroom.  We were always banging our legs, toes, and knees into the foot board of our old Queen size bed.

So my FBP came up with this idea to use two book shelves from IKEA and transform them into a Queen size platform bed without a head or foot board.

He started with two of these book shelves...

We made a trip to Home Depot for wood, joints, bolts, screws, and contact paper.  Six hours later, my FBP had THIS bed...

One more look at the bed...

I love how I gained more space for my cowboy boots!!!!  I do have plans to get some baskets for the remaining cubby holes at the bottom of the bed to store other things.

Mostly I'm just happy we gained so much space by getting rid of the clunky old bed.

If you want to do this yourself, this is where my FBP got the inspiration. Now he modified our bed a little differently than this picture and IKEA hack sight, but this is the general idea.

Stay tuned for the next project... :)
