Baby Scare...

Let me start by saying ALL babies are gifts.  Especially those born with disabilities and such.  But all parents can relate to what I'm about to say.  I just want our little girl to pop out HEALTHY!  It's my number one fear.

So this story goes back to when Kristen (my wife) and I went back to visit my family back in Michigan a couple weeks ago.  Our doctors appoinment with the gender reveal of our baby wasn't going to be for a couple more weeks, so we decided to pay $40 and go to this private place in Chicago that performs ultrasounds.  I had no idea I would walk out of there completey scared and heartbroken.

I wasn't aware of this walking in, but since these little private ultrasound places don't have doctors on staff, they can't comment about anything medical.  They basically just find the gender for you and give you some pictures to take home.

So everything seemed to be going well.  She kept commenting on how beautiful the little baby looked in Kristen's tummy.  Then I said something I never should have said.  I blurted out, "and she looks healthy, right?"  The ultrasound tech kind of paused and said.... "well... I can't comment on anything medical.  If I find any problems I have to place a private call to your doctor."

The tone she was using didn't comfort this worried dad-to-be's heart at all!!  So I doubled down.  I said, "but you won't have to call the doc, right?  Because she looks healthy, right...?"  Now keep in mind I had NO idea that she wasn't allowed to comment on anything medical.  I was just wanting to hear that phrase, "everything looks good to me!"

So the tech paused again... as if she was searching for the right words... "Like I said... um... if I were to see anything bad... I would have to call your doctor privately after you leave."  Well that's all it took.  I could barely pay attention to anything after that.  I'd like to think I'm pretty good at reading body language, and I swear I could tell she was holding back some bad news from us.  I could hear it in her voice.  I knew something was wrong.

So we ended up going back home to see my family.  We cut into the gender cake... it was pink!  We celebrated the fact that we had a little girl on the way... but all the while in the back of my mind I was scared to death that something was wrong with our little one.  It's all I could think about.

Well finally, yesterday we went to see the doctor in Bellevue.  He did a thorough 3D ultrasound and inspected every inch of that little baby.  And finally at the end came the news... "your baby is completely healthy!  She weighs 1 pound and everything looks completely normal."  I wanted to jump up and pump my fist and scream YEAHHHHHH BABY!!!  But I just sat there in relief trying to hold back the tears.

I was mostly successful at holding back the tears... until he said the following:  "Nick and Kristen, when you guys get home today, you should write your little girl a letter.  Tell her how much you love her already... how much you can't wait to meet her... and how happy you are that she looks so healthy."  That was it.  I was done.  Tears.

I know, I know.  I worry too much.  I shouldn't have gotten so nervous.  But this is my first child!  It's hard not to worry.

Anyway, let me conclude with this.  In my opinion, go to a damn doctor when you get an ultrasound!!  Especially when it's your first baby.  There's nothing to me like the peace of mind that a good doctor can provide.

More updates soon... thanks as always for reading :)

Baby Relief
Nick, I am so happy that your ultrasound turned out wonderful and your little girl is healthy! I had a scare similar to that with my third child. The US tech mentioned that it looked like I had a rupture on my placenta and that my baby may be at risk of dying. But, he said I had to meet with my OB Doc to confirm. I could not get an appointment for TWO weeks! That was the longest two weeks of my life. When I met with my doctor, there was nothing abnormal about my US. That baby boy was born healthy and is now an amazing 22 year old man! You are right to worry and be afraid and love your baby... keep up the good work!

I think all parents will relate. As a grandparent you worry when your daughter is delivering. Worry comes with the territory of being a loving parent.

I understand!
As a father of a 5 1/2 week old baby, where you talk about tearing up made me tear up a bit too. It's hard not to be worried, but like the person above me said, the worrying isn't going away any time soon. Congratulations to you and your wife!

Being a parent is the best and hardest job EVER!
Nick- you will never stop worrying! You will worry while she is pregnant and if the baby will come out healthy, then you will worry about is she eating enough, pooping/peeing, SIDS and then just about everything under the moon. Try not to let it get to you, I worry about everything and I have a 3 year old (girl) and a 6 month old (boy). When I was pregnant with my son #2 and had the ultra sound last December and they said BOY! My husband and I were sooo excited! Then they told us there was water on one of his Kidney's (which is sometimes a marker for down syndrome). We did some genetic testing and had to wait for 2 weeks to find out. Well everything turned out fine and the water went away on his Kidneys. Sometimes I think those ultrasounds can cause more worry. I am glad you have a healthy baby girl. Good luck!

I can relate!
When I was pregnant with my son, I went and did the 20 week ultrasound at my doctors office. The tech's there can comment on the ultrasound pictures and the tech coming back to his nogg'n area. I finally asked if everything was ok? The tech said he was trying to find something. I asked what, and he said he found a small area that looks to be a problem but wanted a better picture to make sure. My heart sank, tears filled my eyes and I laid there just waiting. I had my doctors appt right after the ultrasound and I got to talk to my doctor. I asked her what was going on and she said the tech found a small bubble in his head that is an indicator for Down Syndrome. Again, my world fell apart. I spent the next week worrying and wondering if I was capable of caring for a child with DS. I finally prayed and asked God to give me guidance. I went back to the doctors the next week, they did a follow up ultrasound and my prayers came through, I had a healthy baby boy. Come to find out that the bubbles appear and can disappear at random. It never ends though, I still worry about my 5 year old and my son!

oh lordy
I had a horrible scare with my 5th daughter we were told the testing came back abnormal and they tested for down syndrome and it appeared that she was more than likely to have down syndrome,So as we went home and attempted to get all the family in the same room and tell them that they were going to have a baby sister but that she was going to be born special and would need to all learn to assist her in different ways...we were prepared well as prepared as you can be until the actual day and then we had another test done and the Dr confirmed she was going to have medical issues we prayed on it and prayed and asked god to allow her to be healthy even if that meant special needs but just healthy that's all!! and when the big day came she was born and they checked her over and she had absolutely no signs of anything wrong with her the dr said we would have to wait and see how she is in a few months...well needless to say she is turning 3 in January and is as healthy as can be Thanks be to god~~~ Goodluck on your beautiful baby girl~!

I'd love to tell you it gets easier with your next child, or third for that matter. But it doesn't! It's something you can't control and for that fact alone, makes people so worried! I'm so glad everything came back healthy for you three! Congrats! :)
